Team Record Falls, Skifest Results

By: Adam Koehler September 8, 2008

Many members of the Marquette Waterski & Wakeboard Team gathered to leave for the first tournament of the season on Friday Sept. 5. Three full MU Vans and a car pulling the team trailer ventured to Evansdale, Iowa to participate in the Iowa Hawkeye Skifest. The tournament ran all of Saturday Sept 6th and well into the afternoon on Sunday Sept. 7th.

First off the dock on Saturday morning was women's slalom, followed immediately by men's slalom. Both the men's and women's events lead to a rocky start to the weekend for the team as a whole. All team slalom scores were lead by senior, Marcy Holtz who ended the day as the only slalom skier to run an opening pass for the team. Marcy placed 5th in women's slalom with 1.5 buoys at 32mph '15 off the line. The men ended up placing 10th in slalom and the women placed 3rd.

Men's trick ran last on Saturday and women's trick ran first on Sunday morning. The trick events turned out much better than the slalom events overall for the team. The women's trick ski team had Kelly Kotarek and Laura Sampson both posting 200pt runs. On the men's side freshman Dusty Bodine also posted a 200pt run for his first ever collegiate trick pass. The last Marquette skier of the day on Saturday was Adam Koehler. Adam performed a personal best of 970pts in his trick pass, capping off the day of skiing with a solid performance for the team. The pass of 970pts would eclipse the current Marquette team trick record of 750pts set by Christopher Janssen in the fall of 2005. The 970pt performance gave Adam 5th place in the men's trick event. The men's team trick record was the oldest standing team record. The men's team placed 5th in the trick event and the women's team placed 3rd.

The last 'A' team event run on Sunday was men's jump and women's jump took place Saturday afternoon. Both Laura Ferrari and Marcy Holtz landed jumps for the women's team. Marcy would take 4th place in women's jump with a 67ft jump. The biggest surprise came in the men's jump event where freshman Dusty Bodine landed three consecutive jumps with his final leap landing at 83 feet, just 9 feet short of the men's team jump record. The men's team placed 7th in the jump event and the women's team tied for second.

Sunday after men's jump multiple 'B' team events commenced and slowly all the Marquette Waterski & Wakeboard team members that signed up to ski ventured out on to the water. Over the day the three MU Vans, a car, and the team trailer packed up and ventured back to Milwaukee, WI. The weekend had its ups and downs, with the team placing 5th overall, but the team proved that it had a decent amount of potential with returning and new members working out the kinks that come with beginning a new collegiate season. A season of record breaking performances could be in the works, with the team trick record falling this weekend and both Dusty and Marcy leaping to just 9 feet or so off the respective men's and women's jump records.
