Personal Bests Abound, ISU Results

By: Adam Koehler September 15, 2008

The ISU hosted waterski tournament was attended by several Marquette Waterski Team members this past weekend. The tournament was held at the two lake site of Dream Lakes in Huxley, IA. Team members competed in all three events and the team also had a handful of 'B' team skiers. This weekend several new members caught stride in their collegiate waterski careers, including freshmen Dusty Bodine and Laurie Simonds, after mixed results in the previous weekend's Iowa Hawkeye Skifest.

In men's jump Dusty Bodine landed a jump of 88 feet, an improvement of 5 feet over his personal best set last week. Dusty is quickly narrowing the gap between his personal best and the Marquette Waterski Team jump record of 92 feet. In addition to Dusty's jumping the men's team saw JJ Foley land a jump for the very first time; a jump of 41 feet. Also, Alex Curran set a new personal best with a jump of 49 feet. For the women, Laurie Simonds landed for the first time in her collegiate career. She landed all three of her jump attempts with the farthest distance being 44 feet. On the women's side Marcy Holtz landed a jump of 64 feet and Laura Ferrari set a personal best of 49 feet. Overall the women's team placed 3rd and the men's team placed 11th.

The trick event was also littered with personal bests. Dusty Bodine set a personal best of 490 points, a 290 point improvement over his personal best set last week at the Iowa Hawkeye Skifest. Additionally, Adam Koehler also set a personal best of 1040 points, earning 8th place in the event and improving 70 points over his best also set last weekend. With a trick pass of 1040 points Adam has broken the trick record again for the second weekend in a row. On the women's side Marcy Holtz had the high score of the women's team at 970 points, earning a 3rd place finish for the event. Personal bests were set by both Laurie Simonds and Laura Ferrari with the scores 160 points and 100 points respectively. Kelly Kotarek and Laura Sampson both tied their personal bests of 200 points. Overall the men's team placed 8th and the women's team took 1st.

The slalom event was the downfall of the team this weekend. No personal bests were set in the event and the team as a whole was lead by leading scorer Marcy Holtz with a score of 3 buoys. The men's team took 14th place and the women's team took 6th place overall in the slalom event.

The team as a whole took 7th place out of 16 teams that showed up for the tournament. The team had its pitfalls and highpoints over the span of the three events coming from both seasoned veterans and collegiate skiing newcomers, but in many cases there was noticeable improvement over the skiing at the first tournament of the season held last weekend. Next weekend the team will compete at the Great Plains Conference Championships; this tournament is a qualifying tournament for Midwest Regionals.
