Spring Break Ski School at Bennett's

By: Matt Malak March 24, 2010

Last week 14 members of the Marquette Waterski Team embarked on an 18 hour journey to the deep south for their annual spring break ski school trip. The team traveled to Bennett’s Waterski school in Zachary, Louisiana for a week of furthering their waterskiing skills. The team was instructed by some of the best slalom, jump, and trick skiers in the world. Each morning the team woke up early for a rigorous round of stretching led by Ann Bennett. The rest of the morning consisted of two sets of skiing. Each member was able to choose which discipline they wanted to ski for every set. The world class Bennett’s facility offered 3 lakes. Lake 1 focused on slaloming and jumping while lake 2 focused on wakeboarding and beginner jumping. Lake 3 focused on trick skiing and beginner slaloming. After a short break for lunch and advil, the afternoon consisted of 2 more sets of skiing. Except for some chilly mornings, the weather cooperated nicely.

Every member improved their skiing by some degree or another. Some members who had never gone over the jump were landing consistently by the end of the week. Others who had never run a slalom course were easily running it and even increasing the boat speed. Many teammates improved their trick skiing ability too. It didn’t hurt that the team was able to watch 2 of the best trick skiers in the world practice and give their advice. The team was also pulled by brand new Mastercraft boats.

The University of Wisconsin Lacrosse also joined Marquette at Bennett’s for the week. Both teams were happy to get to know each other better. Many team members said that our two teams now hold an everlasting bond. The two teams cannot wait to meet up again at the upcoming spring Midwest tournaments.

The Marquette team traveled to the city of New Orleans Friday night. Everyone enjoyed a fabulous Cajun dinner in the heart of the French Quarter. The night was capped off by a walk down Bourbon Street. The famous street was crowded and lived up to its name and expectations.

By the time Saturday arrived, nobody wanted to return home. Everyone had a blast getting to know their teammates and UW-Lacrosse better. Bennett’s offered one of the best waterskiing experiences in the world. This spring break made everyone look forward to the spring ski season and brought the team closer together.
