Spring Conclusion - Hawkeye Hypothermia

By: Adam Koehler May 6, 2010

Ten skiers ventured out to Iowa this past weekend to participate in Hawkeye Hypothermia. Beyond the cold water, the weather for the weekend was beatiful and sunny without a cloud in the sky. It was quite the contrast to the previous weekend in Neosho, WI where the sun seldom came out and the rain was almost a constant. Of the ten attendees for the tournament, 9 are returning next year and it is Adam Koehler's final collegiate tournament.

As a team, Marquette skied well. Individuals buoying the Spring scores of others that were not up to par. The team ended up in fourth place out of ten teams in attendence. The men's team placed sixth overall and the women's team took first place.

For the men, the team was once again lead by Sophomore Dusty Bodine. His individual scores of 3@34mph '15 off in slalom, 740 points in trick and a leap of 85 feet in jump resulted in placemenets of 5th, a tie for 4th and 7th respectively. He also pulled in a 4th place finish in 3-event overall. Other members of the men's team also set personal bests, with Freshman Nick Doyle tricking 80 points, jumping 55 feet and getting a judges ruling of 5 buoys in the slalom event. Matt Malak tricked a personal best of 200 points and got around 4 buoys in the slalom event. Each of them are now accustomed to the saying 'if you can get to 4, you can get all 6'. On the women's side Laurie Simonds tricked 200 points to achieve a 4th place finish in the event. Also, Andrea Tragos had another solid tournament with here 1 buoy in slalom, 40 points in trick and jump of 38 feet she placed 3rd in the jump event and sixth in overall.

In his final tournament Adam skied well, once again rocking the B-team tag. He achieved a decent score of 2.5 buoys at 30mph in slaom. Saving his best for last, Adam tricked 1040 points for the second tournament this spring, tying his personal best and the team record.

The weather was wonderful this Spring. It produced some tremendous skiing for the Spring season and all our thankful that two out of three tournaments were overwhelmingly sunny. Now the team looks towards Banquet as it is graduating three members--Adam Koehler, David DeDonato and Patric Tuuk--and even farther into the summer and fall as returning members look to take advantage of the summer and come back to school as better and more consistant skiers than in their prior years.
